Instructions for Mail Box and Post

The ELHOA by-laws require homeowners to follow and abide by the rules set forth within Emerald Lakes HOA Covenants, Restrictions and By-Laws. Per the HOA By-Laws – “All mailboxes must be in a size, style, and color approved by the Homeowners’ Association and be maintained in good condition.”

These HOA covenants were established to maintain a consistent and pleasing appearance of our neighborhood which ultimately enhances our home values and aligns with the governance of Montville Township Planning & Zoning Resolutions.

DIMENSIONS ARE FOR THE LARGE BOX [STANDARD BOX DIMENSIONS IN BRACKETS]

  1. Construct the newspaper box that the mailbox will rest upon.
    1. Cut the 2"x8" so you have two side boards each with the following dimensions: 2"x 8" x 32" [2" X 8"X 30"]. Cut 15 degree angles  on both ends of each side board so the finished dimension is 30". [28"]  (If you are unable to mark the angle, a simple method is to measure back 2" on one side of the board and draw a line to the corner on the opposite side, this is the cut line.)
    2. Cut your top and bottom boards from the 1" x 6". Your top board should measure

1" x 6" x 19 1/4" [ 1" X 6" X 17 7/8] and your bottom board should measure 1" x 6" x 16 3/4" [1" X 6" X 16]

    1. Pre-drill the screw holes to avoid splitting the lumber, 4 screws should  be used on side boards to hold both the bottom and top boards in place.
    2. Screw the side boards to the top and bottom boards using 2 1/2" screws. Install the back board into the backend of the tube and secure with 1 5/8" screws to create your newspaper box (see the diagram and pictures for a replica of how the box should look when complete).
    3. Pre-drill hole for the lag bolts. Locate them 2" from the edge and 1 1/2 from the end board and 4" from end board. Note that the position of these holes is reversed on each side, see picture.
    4. Rip the box mounting board to give you 2 boards

2 3/4" x 17 3/4" [ 2 3/4' x 16 1/4] mount these on top of the paper tube with 1 5/8" screws so that the outside edges are 7 7/8" apart and the front end is even with the front of the tube. (see diagram and pictures) A steel bracket to mount the box is available at Lowes.

  1. Stain your post and newspaper chute before installing your mailbox or numbers.  The stain only comes in a gallon size can so you may want to make arrangements to share with a neighbor, or plan to keep the extra for future touch-ups.
  2. Install the mail box on the mounting rails with a 1 3/4" overhang on the front to allow for the door to swing open. Pre-drill the holes and secure with 1 5/8" screws
  3. Attach the house numbers on to each side of your newspaper chute, centering the numbers similar to the placement of our current mailbox.
  4. Set the 6"x 6" post in the ground 36" deep. The only requirement for placement of the post is that the face of the mailbox must be flush with the street. How the post is set in the ground is your choice (in dirt or cement).
  5. Slide your pre-assembled newspaper box onto the 6" x 6" post and level the box before securing the box to the post . The top of the newspaper chute must be 40" to 42" from the street (not the top of the curb) in order to meet postal regulations. When you are sure the box is level and meets the height requirement, secure the newspaper box to the post with lag bolts.
  6. Measure up 20" from the top of the newspaper chute and cut off the top of the post. Install the copper top on your post. Make sure the cap is well secured.
  7. If you have any problems assembling your mailbox, please feel free to contact any member of the board for assistance.
